Winter Thaw Hat

 A Free Knitting Pattern

I think you saw the hints that there would be a hat to match the Winter Thaw Shawl. It is finally here. Earlier this month I had some health concerns and it slowed me down a little, but it's time to get back on a schedule.

Just like the shawl the hat is made with two sock yarns held together. It gives the hat great definition and texture. It also makes it pretty comfortable. Its one of those hats that I could put on and forget I had it on. The pattern repeats are pretty easy especially if you have already made the dishcloth and shawl That pattern is slightly different since it is worked in the round, but the only difference is that instead of working a purl row you are working a knit round.

Winter Thaw Shawl

A Free Knitting Pattern

I had so much fun making this shawl. Like I said in the tutorial post I started this pattern to celebrate the messiness of the season. That season right before it starts to get warm and we are all anxiously waiting for the snow to thaw. Even in the messiness there can be beauty. And without the waiting we wouldn't enjoy the coming quite as much.

I put two strands of sock yarn together for this project. I love how it turned out. The colors blend and come together so perfectly. It is also just the right amount of squishiness (spell check says this isn't a word) and warmth to put around your neck. I have been wearing this shawl a lot, even before I got the good pictures because I couldn't wait.

I also loved it so much that I made a hat to match it, and they have become inseparable. So be on the look out for the hat pattern coming soon!

Winter Thaw Dishcloth

A Free Knitting Pattern

In February I always get those antsy feelings of wanting winter to be over and for spring to get here. It doesn't help that there is always that one day that comes along in February that gets up into the 60's and melts all the snow, leaving this golden muddy hue in its wake. This time we have seen a whole lot of ice after that thaw. The kids are missing school and going crazy, us along with them. I started this pattern to celebrate the messiness of the season. Even in the messiness there can be beauty.

Just like with all of my tutorials here on the blog, when you are done you will have a dishcloth to use or give away. It's always nice to have something functional to use after we have worked hard to learn something.  The main things you will be learning with this dishcloth is how to do a spike stitch and how to make a decrease using 2 slipped stitches. I'm excited for you to learn these so you can join me in making the triangle scarf with this stitch pattern. (you can find that Pattern Here) There is a sneak peek below.

2018 Pattern Recap

A year in review

What a crazy year it has been. Throughout 2018 I continued to add more knitting patterns to the blog. It was a scary process learning and introducing something new. I have also continued to add crochet Patterns. You have been a great support and encouragement. I can't tell you how exciting it is to get on the front page of Ravelry when I put up a new pattern. Us designers really appreciate all those likes and comments. It really helps us know we are doing something right.

I love designing. This coming year my goals are simple. I want to continue growing in my pattern writing skills. Even though I'm good at designing, the actual pattern writing is hard. I want to have great quality patterns for you. I plan to continue cultivating relationships with the people who have been helping me with copy editing and testing. This year I created 23 patterns. Which is a crazy amount when I think about the fact that I moved 1,000 miles back to the United States in September.

One other goal is to better define my brand with the crochet patterns. I feel that I have my brand and style for knitting, but I'm a little all over the place with crochet. It's hard to just pick one area to focus on. So for 2019 you might be seeing a lot more Tunisian Crochet patterns from me. I feel this is an area that I truly love and that I will be excited to teach and expand.

This next year I don't see myself creating that many patterns. Like I said, I really want to focus on the quality this year.  It is also the last year that Sweet Pea will be home with me before she heads to school, so want to focus on having that quality time with her. With that being said I already have the next 4 patterns lined up for 2019. 2 triangle scarves and 2 stitch tutorials. They are a knit and a Tunisian crochet version of the same pattern.

Slalom Hat

A Free Knitting Pattern

My Last Pattern of 2018. What a great year it's been. I plan on getting an end of the year post together that will highlight all the patterns added this year to the blog. There will also be a giveaway attached to that post through my Facebook page so keep an eye out for it!

I have been working on this pattern; The Slalom Hat for awhile; August to be exact. This is the project that I would take with me to the school pick-up line and work on while I waited. I think I also remade it a few times. First I used a bulkier yarn, and with circular needles, then I tried it again with this yarn and circular needles and I still was not happy. I finally decided to go with working it flat and then seaming it. The numbers just wouldn't any other way.

There is always a big debate on using circular needles or straight or double points. I personally love using the circular needles, but I know there are others out there that are just as passionate about their straight needles. If that is you, then this pattern is for you.

I love the classic lines created in this hat, I even had first named this hat the Classy Hat, but when I was all done, I couldn't help by be reminded of little skiers running a slalom course down my hat.

Also this yarn, Baby Alpaca by Lion brand is so wonderfully soft and comfortable. It comes in at a great price of $5.00. That's a pretty great deal. A whole hat for $5.00, that is made out of 100% wool.  I will warn you, you will feel like you are playing yarn chicken with the skein, but I made it twice and had enough to finish the hat.

Diamond Dimensions Hat and Ear Warmer

A Free and Paid Knitting Pattern

I have two new knitting patterns for you today. I wanted to make a similar hat to my Wellsley Hat, but without the extra seaming. This time the texture pattern is a little bit different and the band is kitchener stitched together for a seamless finish. Below I will have the free pattern for the ear warmer and there will be a chance to buy the hat pattern through my Ravelry Store.

While I was working on this pattern I thought it would pair really well with my Diamond Dimensions Neck Warmer, so that is why you might recognize the name. They would be the perfect set to gift together.

This time I used Patons Canadiana Yarn for the ear warmer and hat. This is some of my favorite yarn, I have never been unhappy with it. I wore this hat the other day, and I forgot the hat was even on. This yarn is just so comfortable and soft.

**Can I just say one quick thing about the Wellsley Hat? It's been up on the blog for 2 months and it is already my top 7th pattern on the blog out of almost 7 years of designs. Thanks for all of your love on this pattern.**

Wellsley Cowl

A Free Knitting Pattern

The Wellsley Hat now has its best friend at its side. When designing these two best friends I actually started with the cowl, and made the hat second. I asked my Instagram friends which pattern they wanted to see first and they said the Hat so that is what I started with.

I feel that the Cowl is a little bit easier than the hat because you are not picking up new stitches anywhere. The thing that I love about this pattern is the versatility. It would be pretty easy to make it bigger or smaller to meet your needs, and again the yarn is just so super soft.

I usually have my patterns ready on Monday/ Tuesday but a lot of crazy has happened this week, and we are moving back to the States at the end of the month. I wanted to get this pattern out to you sooner rather than later so I can concentrate on getting everything packed up for the move. In the next coming weeks I'll be able to share more with you about where my family is headed and what we will be up to, but I'm excited to be starting this next chapter.
