Wellsley Hat

A Free Knitting Pattern

It's August! that means fall is just around the corner. I have already seen an increase in page views this past week so I know that you are getting ready for fall too. The kids will be starting back to school soon and we will all have a little bit more time to sit down and stitch something new.

I have 2 new knit patterns to share. I asked around my social media what pattern they would want to see first and the vote was for the hat first. You can find the cowl pattern here!!!!!

For this hat and cowl set I have used Lion brand Heartland yarn. This yarn is so soft. Another great thing is that one skein makes both the hat and the cowl.

Where can I get this Pattern?

This is a free knitting pattern found right here on Designs by Diligence. Just keep scrolling down to read the pattern. If you would like to purchase an ads free, printer friendly PDF you can through my Ravelry Pattern Store for $3.00.
The paid pattern will include everything in this blog post plus charts to help you complete this pattern.

Edited 08/13/2018: Rows 90, 92 and 94 were missing their ribbing stitches, I have added those stitches in.

Edited 10/10/ 2018: Starting on the crown there are too many starting stitches, so I am revising the row count.

Edited 1/1/21: After lots of feedback from others I have made a few changes to the pattern. I have added a couple of stitches on each side of the ribbing to help the hat rim stay more flat. I have also changed how I added the ribbing to the pattern. I also just changed the wording here and there for better understanding.

Hat Rim

Cast on 22 sts with your favorite cast on.

Row 1 and every odd number row: k4, p14, k4 (22 sts)

Row 2: K4, LT, k4, RT, k4, RT, k4

Row 4: K5, LT, k2, RT, LT, k2, RT, k5

Row 6: K6, LT, RT, k2, LT, RT, k6

Row 8: K7, RT, k4, LT, k7

Row 10: K6, RT, LT, k2, RT, LT, k6

Row 12: K5, RT, k2, LT, RT, k2, LT, k5

Row 14: K4, RT, k4, RT, k4, LT, k4

Repeat Rows 1 through 14 8 times, (that’s 126 rows) 0r until your hat rim measures closest to 20 inches

Row 127: K4, K2togB, k10, K2tog, k4

Row 128: K4, K2togB, k8, K2tog, k4

Row 129: K4, K2togB, k6, K2tog, k4

Row 130: K4, K2togB, k4, K2tog, k4

Row 131: K4, K2togB, k2, K2tog, k4

Row 132: K4, K2togB, K2tog, k4

Row 133- 135: K10

Bind off.

Pick up 95 stitches using your circular needles, along the side of the hat rim just completed; starting at row 126 before the decreases.

(If you pick up in each “ditch” add a stitch every 3rd st. That should bring you very close to 95).

Working in the round

PM, k into the first picked up stitch to join the round. K 9 rounds, sl the marker as you pass it.

At this point your hat should measure 7 ½ inches. Add more rounds if needed.

Crown of Hat (Switch to double point needles or 2 circular needles)

Row 1: {K7, k2togb, k, k2tog, k7} repeat 4 times (85 loops)

Row 2 and every even number: K

Moondoggie Bag

A free knitting pattern

For the longest time I have been wanting to make a knit version of the Copy Cat Bag. I have it ready for today. So I will need to explain the name a little. I wanted the name to go along with the crocheted version, I thought whats the opposite of cats, (well dogs), and I liked how the colors I chose reminded me of the beach, which reminded me about the movie Gidget and her man was named Moondoggie. So there you go; that was my thought process on the name for the bag.

I changed a few things. The biggest being that I used worsted cotton yarn for the bag instead of Lustersheen. With the larger yarn, it's able to be worked up quickly over the weekend.

This bag is the perfect size to throw your kindle or tablet in and small project to go relax at the park or beach to find your own Moondoggie. I lined my bag and added handles. All of these things are totally optional. Try different things to really make it your own.

Sewing your bag together.

  • First fold the sides in half  long ways so stitch 1 is touching stitch 12. Wip stitch row 1 together. Repeat on the other side piece.
  • Then fold your middle piece together to find the middle stitch and mark it.
  • Put one side piece and middle piece together with the knit sides facing together.
  • Wip stitch them together, it won't be stitch to stitch for every color change you will need to skip a stitch for it to come out even.
  • Repeat on the other side.
When all the seams are sewn together, add a Rim
Pick up each stitch around the bag opening with color A using circular needles, knit 5 rounds and bind off.
Weave in your ends.

Waterways Cowl

A Free Knitting Pattern

This Pattern gained a lot of inspiration from the color itself. The colorway is called Aquatic Speckle. I wanted to explore the different ways we represent water in knitting. I really wanted the cowl to have the look of water moving through a creek or the different stages of a storm.

It took me awhile to pin point the exact design that I wanted. I actually had the design flip flopped and the cowl was half way done. I decided it needed to be the other way.
I ripped it all out. That was a rough day.
I started again and I'm so glad I did. I love how the different textures effect how the speckles lay in the cowl giving it a striking difference in the middle block.

The pattern starts with a simple eyelet pattern, that grows into the middle cable section, and then back to the eyelet pattern.

Come This Way Purse

A Free Knitting Pattern

I have to tell you a story. I thought I was designing a cowl, and my husband came home from school and looked at what I was making and said, "Oh, are you making a bag?" I looked down at what I was making, and said, "yep, I guess I am." And that is how this purse was born. He saw the vision before I did. I love that he did and I love all the texture that is on this bag.

This Purse was a quick project. I was able to make it in a weekend. Even though there is a lot happening, the stitches are easy to master. I added a zipper and lined the purse. At the end of the post I have a link to another post showing how I did that. I also made my own handles for the purse, but I think it would look fabulous with re-purposed handles from a bag you are not using any more.

Douglas Fir Dishcloth

A Free Knitting Pattern

This will be my last Holiday Gift Pattern for 2017. It's crazy that 2018 is so close upon us. Almost 20 years ago we were going crazy over Y2K. I'm so happy the clocks kept going.

Do you have a favorite Christmas tree story? When I was a little girl my family liked going to this out in the middle of nowhere tree farm to pick out our tree. I remember the first year we did it. We totally miss judged the length of the tree. It was gigantic, and my dad had to spend quite a while trimming the tree to get it to fit in our house. The next year we were wiser and picked out a much smaller one. There are also lots of stories my sister could tell of the cat knocking the tree over on her.

I have a little pattern today to bring back some of those memories. I say little, but this dishcloth is bigger than what I usually make them, because I like little dishcloths. Other people will probably say it is just right at 7 1/2 by 7 1/2

Easy Yarn Unicorn Hair

A Free Tutorial For Unicorn Hair

The older Little One gets the more I need to get creative with Halloween. She is getting more ideas about what she wants and what is considered cool. Is cool even the right word anymore? We decided on her being a unicorn; not too baby but still sweet. Right away Sweet Pea insisted that she would be a princess, and she is telling everyone that Mommy is going to make her a princess. She gets very defensive if we suggest anything else. 2 year olds are so easy.  Hopefully this tutorial will be easier than figuring out the workings of preteens.

Tutorial

Start with a long tail slip knot, ch 12, cut your yarn for a long tail and pull tight.
Loop in scraps of yarn into the chains until the section is full.
Repeat this process 5 or 6 times. For the top piece add scraps on both sides of the chains.

Sew in the strips of hair using the long tails of the chain stitches, and wip stitch it down to the hat so the hair falls at the base of the hat. Weave in any left over yarn.

Repeat the process above, a few rows over the last strip of hair.

Keep going all the way up until you reach the ears.

On the last strip, make sure you have hair going in both directions for bangs and back mane hair.

Swift Swirl Cowl

A knitting Pattern

I have a new pattern to add to the Swift Swirl Series. The last 2 patterns, the Swift Swirl Hat and the Swift Chevron Hat were worked in the round. For this pattern it is worked flat so some of the rules change a little. It is still an easy to follow along pattern and I was able to finish this cowl up in a weekend.

I am pretty sure this is going to be a fall staple in my wardrobe this year.  I'm wearing it right now as I type.

Where can I get this Pattern ?

Baby Helix Hat

A Free Knitting Pattern

I have been playing with Right and Left Twist Stitches again. I really love these stitches. They are so versatile, and they make texture so much easier than remembering to yarn over and decrease when needed. If you don't know the right and left twist I would encourage you to lookup some Youtube videos and watch how they are made.

You can also look at a couple of my patterns that include them. The Swift Swirl Hat is a great introduction to the Right Twist Stitch and it is a free pattern. Its companion pattern The Swift Chevron Hat is a paid pattern that takes the swirl to another level by making a chevron instead with Right and Left Twist.

The Baby helix Hat is an easy pattern to follow.  It is a 5 round repeat, that gives the allusion of twisting cables almost like a double helix. For the yarn I used two different yarns so you could see how it worked up in different options. The blue hat is Lion brand Yarn: Woolease, and the pink hat is Red Heart:With Love Metalic.

Where Can I Get This Pattern?

This is a free knitting pattern that you can read and follow along below. The pattern is made for a baby or a 14 in circumference. There is a lot of stretch in this pattern so it will fit and grow with baby for a long time. My 2 year old even stretched it over her head, but it was a bit to short for her, but that gives you an idea of how much stretch there is.

Swift Chevron Hat: A Knitting Pattern

A Companion Pattern to the Swift Swirl Knitting Pattern

I think I say this about every pattern, but I am really excited about this pattern. When I made the Swift Swirl Pattern, I wanted to expand it to this pattern right away. It was just screaming to me that it needed more movement!

This one is not as swift as the first, but it is still a quick pattern to follow. You have to count your rows this time, but the idea is still the same. You are doing the same stitch over and over again and there are no yarn overs, increases or deceases that you have to worry about in the body of the hat and that is what makes it swift.

I love the chevron for this hat. In the pattern it is easily adaptable to make the chevrons as long or short as you like. When I see the chevron pattern I always think of Charlie Brown and his yellow shirt, Harry Potter and his scar, caution signs on the road, and afghans made by great grandma. What Do you always think of when you see the Chevron Pattern?

Materials Needed

Needles: 6,0 mm/US 10 circular needles and a set of double point needles US 10 to finish it off.
Notions: tapestry needle

Special stitches:

Right Twist (RT): Knit 2 together keeping both stitches on the left needle, knit into the first stitch, then pull both stitches onto the right needle, stitch complete.

Left Twist(LT):  Knit through the back loop of the 2nd st, keep the stitch on the left needle, knit in the first stitch, then pull both stitches onto the right needle, stitch complete.

Sk2p: Slip stitch to the right needle, knit 2 stitches together, pass over slipped st over the 2 knit stitches.
