Ruth's Kitchen Towel

A Free Knitting Pattern

It's been a while since I have shared a free knitting pattern. I recently made a crochet version of this towel. You can find it on Ravelry here. When I was finished with it I knew I wanted to make a knit version and so here it is.

This is the hanging kitchen towel you always wanted. It is soft with the perfect subtle texture to get your hands dry. It is constructed just right so that it will hang in place without going anywhere.  Make a couple of matching dishcloths for the perfect house warming gift.

Hubbub Hat

A Free Knitting Pattern

If you follow along on my Instagram account you will know that I have started learning how to make stranded work. I have really had a lot of learning this new skill. Since I also crochet it has been fairly easy for me to figure out how to use both of my hands at the same time, and I'm getting pretty quick at it.

This pattern design was a quick idea that I charted out with Stitch Fiddle. I wanted a pattern to try that wouldn't have a lot of yarn floats in it. Floats were giving me trouble and they were slowing me down. This design was an answer for that.

In the pattern below it is the written out pattern. I have the PDF pattern for sale in my Shop. The PDF has the written instructions and the chart for the complete hat.

For the yarn I used Lion Brand Mandala yarn in the color troll. The colors were so fun and vibrant. They were already in a cake so all the colors were already picked for me for no fuss. For this hat I chose the color on the outside  and the color on the inside. You can do what you want. With one cake I was able to knit three adult hats. That's a pretty great deal!

Wellsley Hat

A Free Knitting Pattern

It's August! that means fall is just around the corner. I have already seen an increase in page views this past week so I know that you are getting ready for fall too. The kids will be starting back to school soon and we will all have a little bit more time to sit down and stitch something new.

I have 2 new knit patterns to share. I asked around my social media what pattern they would want to see first and the vote was for the hat first. You can find the cowl pattern here!!!!!

For this hat and cowl set I have used Lion brand Heartland yarn. This yarn is so soft. Another great thing is that one skein makes both the hat and the cowl.

Where can I get this Pattern?

This is a free knitting pattern found right here on Designs by Diligence. Just keep scrolling down to read the pattern. If you would like to purchase an ads free, printer friendly PDF you can through my Ravelry Pattern Store for $3.00.
The paid pattern will include everything in this blog post plus charts to help you complete this pattern.

Edited 08/13/2018: Rows 90, 92 and 94 were missing their ribbing stitches, I have added those stitches in.

Edited 10/10/ 2018: Starting on the crown there are too many starting stitches, so I am revising the row count.

Edited 1/1/21: After lots of feedback from others I have made a few changes to the pattern. I have added a couple of stitches on each side of the ribbing to help the hat rim stay more flat. I have also changed how I added the ribbing to the pattern. I also just changed the wording here and there for better understanding.

Hat Rim

Cast on 22 sts with your favorite cast on.

Row 1 and every odd number row: k4, p14, k4 (22 sts)

Row 2: K4, LT, k4, RT, k4, RT, k4

Row 4: K5, LT, k2, RT, LT, k2, RT, k5

Row 6: K6, LT, RT, k2, LT, RT, k6

Row 8: K7, RT, k4, LT, k7

Row 10: K6, RT, LT, k2, RT, LT, k6

Row 12: K5, RT, k2, LT, RT, k2, LT, k5

Row 14: K4, RT, k4, RT, k4, LT, k4

Repeat Rows 1 through 14 8 times, (that’s 126 rows) 0r until your hat rim measures closest to 20 inches

Row 127: K4, K2togB, k10, K2tog, k4

Row 128: K4, K2togB, k8, K2tog, k4

Row 129: K4, K2togB, k6, K2tog, k4

Row 130: K4, K2togB, k4, K2tog, k4

Row 131: K4, K2togB, k2, K2tog, k4

Row 132: K4, K2togB, K2tog, k4

Row 133- 135: K10

Bind off.

Pick up 95 stitches using your circular needles, along the side of the hat rim just completed; starting at row 126 before the decreases.

(If you pick up in each “ditch” add a stitch every 3rd st. That should bring you very close to 95).

Working in the round

PM, k into the first picked up stitch to join the round. K 9 rounds, sl the marker as you pass it.

At this point your hat should measure 7 ½ inches. Add more rounds if needed.

Crown of Hat (Switch to double point needles or 2 circular needles)

Row 1: {K7, k2togb, k, k2tog, k7} repeat 4 times (85 loops)

Row 2 and every even number: K

Row 3: K6, k2togb, k, k2tog, k6} Repeat 4 times (75 loops)

Row 5:{K5, k2togb, k, k2tog, k5} Repeat 4 times (65 loops)

Row 7:{K4, k2togb, k, k2tog, k4} Repeat 4 times (55 loops)

Row 9:{K3, k2togb, k, k2tog, k3} Repeat 4 times (45 loops)

Row 11:{K2, k2togb, k, k2tog, k2} Repeat 4 times (35 loops)

Row 13: {K, k2togb, k, k2tog, k} Repeat 4 times (25 loops)

Row 15: {K2tog} Repeat 11 times, k last st (13 loops)

Row 16: K (13 loops)

Bind off with a long tail.

Sew up the brim so the triangle overlaps and add the button.

Weave in your ends.

Diamond Dimensions Neck Warmer

A Free Knitting Pattern

The great thing about creativity is that it grows and expands as you learn and exercise it more. Last year when I learned how to make the Left and Right Twist stitch I never realized I would continue to come up with more and more designs that use the stitches. I've been told the best way to grow a business is to build off of what you already know and have done. I don't know if I will ever come to the end of my ideas, but I will just keep putting them out there until there are no more.

The Diamond Dimensions Neck Warmer Uses the Right Twist Stitch, the Left Twist st, Knit st, and Purl Stitch. There are no tricky yarn overs so these patterns make good t.v. watching projects. Once the pattern  establishes itself its easy to follow along and see what needs to happen next. If you purchase the PDF pattern there is a chart that is included with the written instructions.

Where can I get this Pattern?

Swift Swirl Cowl

A knitting Pattern

I have a new pattern to add to the Swift Swirl Series. The last 2 patterns, the Swift Swirl Hat and the Swift Chevron Hat were worked in the round. For this pattern it is worked flat so some of the rules change a little. It is still an easy to follow along pattern and I was able to finish this cowl up in a weekend.

I am pretty sure this is going to be a fall staple in my wardrobe this year.  I'm wearing it right now as I type.

Where can I get this Pattern ?

This is a free knitting pattern. Just keep scrolling down to see this pattern. You can also purchase this pattern in my Ravelry store for $3.00. This is a great option if you want an ads free printer friendly version of the pattern. Start at m Ravelry Page Of click the Buy Me link below.

Baby Helix Hat

A Free Knitting Pattern

I have been playing with Right and Left Twist Stitches again. I really love these stitches. They are so versatile, and they make texture so much easier than remembering to yarn over and decrease when needed. If you don't know the right and left twist I would encourage you to lookup some Youtube videos and watch how they are made.

You can also look at a couple of my patterns that include them. The Swift Swirl Hat is a great introduction to the Right Twist Stitch and it is a free pattern. Its companion pattern The Swift Chevron Hat is a paid pattern that takes the swirl to another level by making a chevron instead with Right and Left Twist.

The Baby helix Hat is an easy pattern to follow.  It is a 5 round repeat, that gives the allusion of twisting cables almost like a double helix. For the yarn I used two different yarns so you could see how it worked up in different options. The blue hat is Lion brand Yarn: Woolease, and the pink hat is Red Heart:With Love Metalic.

Where Can I Get This Pattern?

This is a free knitting pattern that you can read and follow along below. The pattern is made for a baby or a 14 in circumference. There is a lot of stretch in this pattern so it will fit and grow with baby for a long time. My 2 year old even stretched it over her head, but it was a bit to short for her, but that gives you an idea of how much stretch there is.

A Basket Full of Posies: The Learner's Curve Series

A Free Knitting Pattern

The last pattern in the learner's curve series! I have had so much fun with these patterns, and I think this one is my favorite out of all three of them. I loved it so much I felt that it needed its own name.

Let's review the other two patterns. We started out really simple with the Learner's Curve Dishcloth.  With the dishcloth, we learned the the basics of the slipped stitch and and how to make the i-cord edging.

The second pattern in the series was the Learner's Curve Clutch. We grew our understanding and added dimension to our project. We seemed two sides together to make a simple bag design and we practiced making the i-cord all on its own.

The third and final pattern we are taking all that we learned to make a really lovely basket. The slip stitch pattern is the same and we keep the ideas of seaming two sides together with the i-cord edging.

 Material's Needed

Yarn: Any worsted cotton yarn you have will do. 1 ball for color A and ½ a ball for color B.
Needles: 5.5MM  straight needles and double points. You can use regular needles for the clutch, but for the edging and strap you will need the double points.
Notions: Tapestry needle to sew in your ends.
Size: finished basket is 7 by 7 square. 2 1/2 inches tall.
Gauge: 16 stitches of the pattern = 4 in, 28 rows equals 4 in.
Stitches Used:  Knit (k), Purl (p), Slip Stitch (sl), Knit 2 together (k2tog)

All other sides:

Pick up 28 stiches on side starting with the right side facing up.
Repeat instructions for the first side, for a total of 4 sides.
(Now would be a good time to block your work. It’s not necessary but it gives it a nice finish.)

 Sewing up the corners

With the double pointed needles, put an adjustable loop on your needle, insert your needle through both sides of the fabric at the bottom corner. See picture for clarification.  {Pick up a stitch, k2tog } repeat {to} til you come to the end of the corner (most of mine were 10 stitches), cast off.
Repeat for all the corners.

I-cord Edging and Handles:

Start at a corner, Cast on 3 st onto one of your double point needles.  With the right side facing up, insert the needle in the right hand side corner and {pick up a new st. You should now have 4 st on the needle. Push the needle down so you are now working from the other end, k 2, k2tog through the back loops}
Repeat {to} for a total of 8 times

Make i-cord handles:

Pick up a new stitch, (there should be 4 stitches on the needle, {k 4, move work the other side of the needle} repeat {to} 15 times, k 2, k2tog (for 3 stitches on the needle).
Skip 9 stitches  and {pick up a new st . You should now have 4 st on the needle. Push the needle down so you are now working from the other end, k 2, k2tog through the back loops}
Repeat  {to} for a total of 4 5 times (this should bring you to the start of the next i-cord handle
Repeat the instructions starting at Make i-cord handles:
The i-cord edging after the handle will be a repeat of 37 and not 45.
Cast off. Weave in all you ends.
