A Free Tunisian Crochet Pattern

It has been forever since I have shared a Tunisian Crochet pattern. A whole year in fact. I decided I needed to publish a new one stat. I wanted a cowl that was lacy and chunky at the same time. I also gave it a marled look by crochet two colors at the same time. It gives it a striking effect that makes the stitches stand out. I put this pattern at an intermediate level only because it is a Tunisian crochet pattern.  It only uses basic stitches and it is a 3 row repeat, so it is easy to get into a rhythm with it. Yarn: Knit Picks Brava Sport Weight 273 yards/ 100 grams. Two colors used: Avocado and Custard.

Hook: 9mm Tunisian hook, For Edging: G/4mm regular

Notions: Tapestry needle

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 8 by 26 inches

Gauge: 12 stitches from the stitch pattern x 6 rows = 4 inches

Notes: First loop on the hook always counts as a TKS It is not included in the instructions but it is included in the stitch counts.

Special Stitches:

• TPS (Tunisian Purl stitch): (forward pass) Place yarn in front of your work, insert your hook into the left vertical bar of the st below, yo and pull your yarn through. (Return pass): follow the instructions in the pattern.

• TKS (Tunisian Knit stitch): (Forward pass)working with the yarn behind your work, insert your hook between the vertical bars below the horizontal bars in the st below, yo, pull the yarn through, keep your loop on the hook.(Return pass): follow the instructions in the pattern.

• TK3tog (Tunisian knit 3 together): (forward pass): working with the yarn behind your work insert your hook through the left vertical loops of the next 3 stitches, yo, pull the yarn through , keep your loop on the hook. (return pass): follow the instructions in the pattern.

• Yo (yarn over): (Forward pass) put the yarn over the hook from back to front, (Return pass): treat this as a loop on the return pass

Instructions

Foundation Row: (Forward pass): With both colors held together, Ch 23, insert hook into each ch and pull up a loop for a total of 23 loops on the hook,

(Return pass): Yo, pull through 1 loop, {yo, pull through 2 loops} repeat {to} until you have 1 loop left.


Row 1: (Forward pass): TKS in each st for a total of 23 loops

(Return pass): Yo, pull through 1 loop, {yo, pull through 2 loops} repeat {to} until you have 1 loop left.


Row 2: (Forward pass): {Yo, TK3tog} repeat {to} 6 xs, yo, TKS in the last st. (7 TK3tog, 8 yo, 2 TKS)

(Return pass): Yo, pull through 1 loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until you have 1 loop left.


Row 3: (Forward pass): {Sk yo, (TPS, TKS, TPS) in the next st}, repeat {to} repeat {to} 6 xs, TKS in the last st. (9 TKS, 14 TPS)

(Return pass): Yo, pull through 1 loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until you have 1 loop left.


Continue repeating rows 1-3 until your cowl measures 26 inches


Last Row: Repeat row 1.


Finish off with a long tail. Sew the first row to the last row using a wip st. Secure tail with a knot and weave in your ends.

Edging

Round 1: With one stand of color and the G/4mm hook, attach yarn with a sl st into any side st, ch 1, 2 sc in each st around.


Round 2: Ch 1, sc in starting st, {ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in the next st}, Repeat {to}, to the last st, ch 1, sl st into starting st.


Finish off.


Repeat edging on the other side.


Weave in your ends.

Winthrop Basket

 A Free Crochet Pattern

Some of the best advice I have gotten in my creative business is, "when you have a creative block go back to what you already know and build off of what you have already done." So for me a lot of the time that looks like re-using a stitch pattern or if I have a hat pattern I will try and make a cowl or gloves to go with the hat. 

This past month has brought a lot of extra stress. My Grandpa passed away after a stroke, there has been some other deaths and sickness from friends, one of my daughter's was having a lot of things going on at school and our little county of 34,000 has a positivity rate of 13% for covid testing. That is all the stress of last month. Traditionally November is my busiest time for my blog. I think that is pretty normal for most fiber arts blogs. All of this resulted in my crashing and burning of creativity. 

So I went back to what I know. I looked through my past patterns and found something that I could recreate into something fresh. I came up with the Winthrop Basket. 

Do you recognize the stitch pattern? It is from the Tree Farm Cowl. I had bought some Lion brand Rewind yarn. I thought it would be like t-shirt yarn that I could use for straps on masks. When it came it was very apparent that it was not t-shirt yarn. But it is very light and soft and when it is worked up it feels like felt. I thought it would be perfect for baskets. I'm pretty sure I am right. 

I hope you enjoy these baskets as much as I do.  I'm going as simple as possible for Christmas this year, brown paper bags for gift wrap and red yarn for ribbon. I'm going to use these baskets too. I think I will have the girl's Christmas jammies in them to open Christmas eve.

Last round: Ch 1, reverse sc in each stitch in the round for a total of 75 sts, sl st into starting st. 

Finish off. 

Handles (Make 2)

5 loop i-cord: Make a slip knot, ch 5, yo and pull through a loop in each ch, (5 loops on the hook), {take the back 4 loops off the hook and put them on the cable needle, (yo and pull through one loop on the hook, take the next st off the cable needle and onto your hook) repeat (to) 4 x}, repeat {to} until you have you have 8 inches of cording. Cut a yarn and pull the tail through the loops to close them up.

Follow the picture and pull the cording through the baskets where you want the handles. Then knot the cording to secure in place.

Anisoptra Ear Warmer and Fingerless Gloves

 A Free Crochet Pattern and a Premium Crochet pattern

It took me a while to come up with a name for this ear warmer, and fingerless gloves pattern set. So I took to social media to have you guys help me out. One of you suggested something along the lines of Dragon fly. I googled the scientific name of the dragon fly and decided to go with that. 

But there was an interesting factoid, that I just had to share. According to the Britannica the dragon fly is referred to as the Devil's Darning Needle. "The term devil’s darning needle is derived from a superstition that dragonflies may sew up the eyes, ears, or mouth of a sleeping child, especially one who has misbehaved." My thought was, "well that's just creepy and perfect for Halloween. That solidified my decision for the name."  

This set uses post stitches to create bold lines and design with textured detail, making these accessories pop. These are quick projects that don't use a lot of yarn and don't take a lot of time. I was able to get the whole set with just one skein, but I felt like I was playing yarn chicken the whole time with the last glove so you might want to grab 2 skeins just in case.

A Free Crochet Pattern

I love a good cozy cowl, don't you? I especially love one that I can manipulate and change to suit my needs. So I'm providing you a pattern for one. Cowls with button bands are so versatile and easy to make. You basically make a rectangle and add buttons. Easy Peasey. I have added some cabling for some visual texture. I have also used bulky yarn to make this a quick project.

A Free Crochet Pattern

I have a new Scrapghan pattern for you today. If you have been around this blog for awhile you will know that I love a good scrap busting blanket. I have tried to make a new one every year. If you are on the lookout for more, I have a round-up of my favorite scrapghans here!   Some of the patterns are from my own collection and some are from my favorite designers. 

For this scrapghan I decided to visit the granny square and see how I could incorporate the use of scraps in a classic pattern. Have you worked with spike stitches before? They are a great way to add a pop of color to a project with a lot of extra effort. 

For my blanket I used 2 cakes of Lion brand Mandala yarn and 1 skein of Lion brand Pound of Love. With that amount I was able to get 60 granny squares and a good sized border.  Like with all good scrapghans you can swap out whatever yarn you would like to use for it.

Starburst Blanket

Designer: Julia Schwartz
Yarn: 

• Lion brand yarn Pound of Love 4 medium,100% acrylic, 1020 yards/ 932 m, color Oxford grey one skein needed
• Lion brand yarn Mandala 3 light, 100% acrylic, 590 yards/540 m, color Pegasus 2 cakes needed 

Hook: G/ 7 4.5mm 
Notions: Tapestry needle
Size: 6 by 6 inches per square
Gauge: Each square is 6 by 6 inches. 

Stitches Used: Chain (ch), Slip Stitch (sl st), Double crochet stitch (dc), Single crochet stitch (sc), spike stitch (spike stitch) 
Special stitches:

• Spike stitch: Insert hook into stitch indicated in the pattern, yo, pull back through the stitch stretching the loop up to your current row, yo and pull through both loops on the hook. 

Instructions for the spike stitch granny square

Round 1: Ch 4, sl st in to beginning ch to form a ring, ch 1, 12 sc around the ring, sl st into beginning sc (12 sc)

Round 2: Ch 3(counts as a dc here and throughout), dc in starting st, 2 dc in each of the next 11 sts, sl st into beginning dc. (24 dc)

Round 3: With new color, Ch 1, sc in starting st, sc in the next st, spike stitch in the first stitch of round 1, {Do Not Skip a Stitch, sc in each of the next 2 sts, spike stitch in the next st of round 1}, repeat to last stitch, sl st into first sc. (24 sc sts, 12 spike sts)

Round 4: With Color A, ch 3, dc in each of the next 8 sts, ch 3, {dc in the next 9 sts, ch 3} repeat {to} 2xs, sl st into starting dc. (36 dc)

Round 5: With Color B, ch 1, {sc in the first 2 dc, (spike st in corresponding st of round 3, sk 1 st, sc in next st), repeat (to) 2xs (for a total of 6 sts), sc in each of the next st, 3 sc in the 3 ch sp}, repeat {to} 3xs, sl st into beginning st. (12 spike sts, 36 sc)

Round 6: With color A, Ch 3, dc in each of the next 9 sts, {(2dc, ch 3, 2dc) in the next st, dc in the next 11 sts}, repeat {to} 2xs, (2dc, ch 3, 2dc) in the next st, dc in the last st, sl st into beginning dc. (60 dc)

Finish off both colors and weave in your ends.

Connecting the Squares

Arrange all the squares how you would like them. Take two squares together with their backsides facing each other and sl st through both the back loop of the square closest you and the front loop of square farthest to you. Continue to sl st the squares together until you have the two rows of squares stitched together.

When all the rows are stitched together, go back and sl st all the columns of squares together.

Blanket Border

Round 1: In any corner stitch, sl stitch, ch 1, 2 sc in corner sp, sc in each st and 2 sc in each ch sp down the sides (see picture for reference), and 3 sc in each of the corner spaces, sc in the last corner, sl st into the beginning st.

Round 2-3: Ch 3, dc in corner st, dc in each st and (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each of the corner sts, for the last corner st ( 2 dc, ch 2,) sl st into beginning st

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in each st, and 3 sc in each corner sp, sl st into beginning st.

Finish off and weave in all your ends (find a good show to watch while weaving in all your ends.)

Tree Farm Cowl

A Free Crochet Pattern

We have now entered into the layering season and I am all here for it. I wanted to make a cowl that was easy to make, lots of texture and extra long to loop it around twice. This is the finished product. The Tree Farm Cowl is really easy to follow once you get the repeats down. There are only 2 rows to remember so you don't have to constantly be looking at the pattern to know what to do next.

For the yarn, I recommend using a size 4 or 5 yarn that is soft and slightly fuzzy.

Stitches Used: Chain (ch), Foundation double crochet (fdc), Half Double Crochet (hdc), Slip Stitch (sl st), Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc), Double crochet stitch (dc), Front post  double treble crochet (fpdtc)
Special stitches:

• fdc: yo, insert hook through the bottom horizontal v at the bottom of stitch just finished, yo, and pull back through for a total of  3 loops on the hook, yo and pull through 1 loop (this counts as the chain), (yo and pull through 2 loops) twice.
• fpdtr: yo 3 times, insert hook around desired stitch from front to back, yo and pull through for a total of 5 loops on the hoop, (yo and pull through 2 loops) 4 times.

Instructions

pattern repeat is 25 + 1 

Round 1: ch 4, fdc in 4th chain from hook, fdc 150 more times for a total of 151 fdc, being careful to not twist your work sl st into starting dc to form a loop. 

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each dc, sl st in to first dc. (151 sts)

Round 3: Ch 3, *(fpdc around next dc, dc in next dc) repeat (to) 2 times, sk 3 sts, fpdtr in the next st 2 rows down, sk the st behind the fpdtr just made, {dc in each of the next  4 sts, fpdtr in the st 2 rows below right next to the fpdtr previously made, sk 4 sts, fpdtr in the next st 2 rows below, skip  2 sts behind the fptdc sts just made} repeat {to}, dc in the next 4 sts, fpdtr in the st 2 rows below right next to the fpdtr previously made, sk st behind the fpdtr just made, dc in the next st,* Repeat *to* 5 times. Sl st into beginning st. (Note on last repeat the last dc is not needed) (18 fpdc, 36 fpdtr, 97 dc) 

Rounds 4: Ch 3, {(fpdc around next dc, dc in next dc) repeat (to) 2 times, dc in the next 19 sts,} repeat {to} 5 times, sl st into beginning st. (note on last repeat the last dc is not needed) (18 fpdc, 114 dc)

Rounds 5- 12: Repeat rounds 3 and 4

Round 13: Repeat row 2

Finish off. 

Weave in your ends. Make a special note to close the gap created when connecting the first round.
