A  Free Beginner Friendly Crochet Pattern

I love making baby things in the spring. Maybe it has something to do with new life springing up everywhere in nature, I just have to be a part of it too somehow. Last month my church had a baby shower for the City Union Mission. 

It was not a typical baby shower. For one we had no idea who the baby was, and there was no expectant mother there to greet us. The City Union Mission had a need for more baby items, so we answered the call in a small way. On Doughnut Sunday we gathered together all the baby things we collected throughout the month and we got to gush over all the little things that fit babies. When everyone one finished Oooo and awing one of the ladies took all the things up to where they needed to go. This blanket was my contribution to the baby items.  

This pattern is a really easy pattern that is great to do while watching a show, or you just need something easy for a change. It was so easy I was surprised that I couldn't find any other patterns like it on Ravelry. Because of that I have typed up the pattern to share with you.

Pattern Instructions

Increasing Rows

Row 1: Ch 2, make 3 sc in the second ch from the hook. (3 sc made)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in the first st, ch 1, sk 1 st, 2 sc in the last st. (4 sc made, 1 ch made)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in the first st, {ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in the next ch}, Repeat {to} to the last 2 stitches, ch 1, sk 1 st, 2 sc in the last st. (2 stitch increase every row) 

Keep repeating row 3 until the triangle is 36 inches or until you have reached your desired width. 

Decreasing Rows

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, sc in the first st, sc2tog in the next st and ch, {ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in the next ch}, repeat {to} to the last 4 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, sc2tog in the next ch and sc, sc in the last st. (2 decreases in each row)

Keep repeating row 1 until there are only 5 sts left

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in the first st, sc3tog in the next 3 sts, sc in the last st

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc3tog in the last 3 sts. 

Finish off 

Edging

Row 1: Attaching the yarn at any corner, ch 1, {(sc, ch 1, sc) in the corner st, sc in each st to the next corner} repeat {to} until the last corner, sl st into the first st.

Row 2: Sl st into the corner ch st, {(sc, ch 1, sc) in the same corner st, ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in the next st} repeat {to} to the last corner, sl st into the first st. 

Continue repeating row 2 until you have your desired width of edging. 

Last row: Ch 1, reverse sc in each st, sl st in first st.

Finish off.

Weave in your ends.

Crochet Tutorial for the Lateral Braid Stitch

A Free Crochet Pattern and Tutorial 

I'm going to be coming out with a new child's sweater pattern soon. Have you seen it on Instagram?  In the pattern there is a stitch that might be unfamiliar to some of you so I wanted to have a quick tutorial for how to execute the stitch.

As always with my tutorials when you are done you will have a finished dishcloth to use or gift.

The stitch is a modified front post double crochet stitch. That's a mouthful. I asked around a little to see if there was a name for this stitch and there was no determined answer. Moogly has a video tutorial where she calls this stitch the Shallow Post Double Crochet. But she made the name up too. So I am calling the stitch the Lateral Braid Stitch. If someone comes along and says what the name is I will go back and change.

I wanted the look of a knitted lateral braid for the sweater. I felt that this stitch had the definition and texture that I was looking for.  So without further ado.

The Lateral Braid Stitch. 

Like I said earlier this is a modified Front post Double crochet, so you will start the stitch just like any double crochet stitch.

• a yarn over
• insert your hook right under the v of the stitch you just finished stitching into, and around the post of the next stitch. so it looks like you are straddling both "v's"

• yarn over
• pull hook back through the stiches
• yarn over
• pull through 2 loops

• yarn over
• pull through 2 loops 

Some things to think about when you are making the dishcloth pattern below. 

• Make sure you are keep watch of your stitch count. This stitch is easy to make one too many, or be short a stitch, because of going into the last stitch just made. 
• The lateral braid shows up on the wrong side of the fabric
• This stitch really only works when you are turning after each row. I tried this going in the round and it did not have the same look.

Summer Festival Clutch

A Free Beginner Friendly Crochet Pattern 

I've got a great beginner friendly pattern for you all today. The only stitches in this clutch are sc and sl st. It doesn't get easier than that. I have been noticing a trend for the summer of circular clutches and baskets for hand bags. I love the artisan look that is being developed in fashion as of late. So here is my take on the trend. 

This is a little clutch is just the right size to have your bare essentials. My girls love it to put their little special things in. I used Bernat Handicrafter for the yarn. I love the color that I chose. It makes it look more like a basket and I finished it with a simple embroidery design. of long stitches to make the flower. I added some lazy daisy stitches for the leaves in a secondary color.

Assembling the bag

• For the front of the bag, embellish with embroidery and add a button to the to the center.
• Wip stitch the first 45 sts of the front piece with the first 45 rows of the side and wrist strap. 
• Repeat with the back side. 
• Fold the left over rows of the side and sew it together to form the wrist strap.
• For button flap, On the back, find the middle sc of unused sts, attach yarn and ch 20, sl st into starting sc, finish off.

Painted Butterfly

A Free Crochet Pattern 

Ever since I made my painted sunflower. I've been wanting to make and paint something else. My girls and I had so much fun coming up with these butterflies to help bring in the Spring weather. They have been begging me to make some more so they can decorate and paint mom's creations. This was a great project to get them involved, and excited about fiber art. All fiber art doesn't have to be soft and covered in granny squares. It can be hardened and painted for a whole new look. 

Even if you don't want to stiffen them they would make great appliques to any bag or hat. I used Red Heart Luster Sheen for the thread. Some times this thread is hard to find but they still have it at my Wal-mart.  You can substitute with any size 3 fashion thread, or you can put two strands of six 10 together.

Make a slip knot, ch 5, pull up a loop in each ch, Take the back 4 loops off the hook and put them on the cable needle, (yo and pull through one loop on the hook, take the next st off the cable needle and onto your hook) repeat (to) 4 times

continue repeating for 55 rows.

Finish off and weave in your ends.

Follow the pictures and tie the butterfly body together and to the wings.

Starching

I like using sugar starch.

You will need handy some cardboard covered with wax paper.

Mix 1 cup of sugar with ½ a cup of water, put it over medium heat, and stir it until the sugar melts and becomes translucent, this will happen right before boiling.

Take the starch off of the heat.

Soak your butterfly in the starch, making sure all parts of it is saturated. It will be hot and sticky so take caution when taking it out, ring out or let it drip off all excess starch.

Place it on the wax paper covered cardboard stretch and place it how you like and then let it sit to dry.

Depending on the weather it should dry and harden in 48 to 72 hours.

A Tisket A Tasket Basket

As you can see from the picture above I was meaning to have this pattern out before Christmas, my design schedule changed when I made the Etching Scarf Pattern. I think this date will be better anyway.

Easter is only a couple of months away. Do you like to make Easter baskets for your loved ones? I have made a few different ones. I made a really sturdy one with fabric strips and I have made a coil basket with thread and t-shirt yarn.

I really like this basket, because it looks so much like a woven basket. The tunisian seed stitch is the perfect look for a woven basket. I paired the basket with the attached i-cord edging to give it a modern streamlined look.

If this pattern looks a little hard for you. Don't forget that I have a practice pattern available for this basket. the A Trisket A Tasket Dishcloth will help you go through all the stitches need to make the basket.

This basket is easy to adjust in size. If you want a bigger basket I would suggest switching to a Tunisian hook. The math for making it bigger would be the width of stitches plus 20. So if you want a basket that is 30 stitches wide, You will want to make the pattern 50 rows tall. Do you see what I am saying? I'm sure that it will make more sense when you read through the pattern.

Row 2: Forward pass: (tks, tps) repeat (to) for 15 stitches
 return pass: yo, pull through 1 loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until you have 1 loop left.

Row 3: Forward pass: (tps, tks) repeat (to) for 15 stitches
return pass: yo, pull through 1 loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until you have 1 loop left.

Row 4-35: Repeat rows 2 and 3

Sides of the basket (repeat instructions on both sides) 

Row 1: working down the long side of the fabric with the right side facing up, skip 10 rows, sl st into the next st, bring up a loop from the next 14 sts for a total of 15 loops on the hook 
Return pass: return pass: yo, pull through 1 loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until you have 1 loop left. 

Repeat pattern rows 2 and 3 for a total of 10 rows. 
Finish off.

Wip stich the 4 side corners together. 

Attached I-cord Edging 

With a new color, make a slip knot, ch 3, pull up a loop in each ch, insert the hook in a corner st, yo and pull up a loop for a total of 4 loops on the hook, {take the back 3 loops off the hook and put them on the cable needle, (yo and pull through one loop on the hook, take the next st off the cable needle and onto your hook) repeat (to) 2 times, take the last loop off the cable needle, place the loop on the hook, insert the hook into the next st of dishcloth, yo and pull through, yo and pull through 2 loops}

You should have 4 loops on your hook again.

Repeat {to} for a total of 19 stitches.

Regular I-cord handles 
Take the back 3 loops off the hook and put them on the cable needle, (yo and pull through one loop on the hook, take the next st off the cable needle and onto your hook) repeat (to) 3 times
Make 8 to 10 stitches

Go back to the attached I-cord edging for 23 stitches 

Make 8 to 10 stitches for the I- cord handles
Make 4 stitches for the attached I cord edging

To finish off, yo and pull through all 4 loops, sl st into the starting ch of the edging.
Finish off.
Weave in your ends.

A Tisket A Tasket Dishcloth

A Free Crochet Pattern

I have a quick little pattern for you this week. This is a practice pattern for a basket that I am going to share next week. This Dishcloth will help you practice the Tunisian knit stitch and the Tunisian purl stitch for the body of the dishcloth. The pattern repeat is often referred to as the seed stitch in knitting. You will also learn how to make the attached i-cord stitch for the border of the dishcloth. These Dishcloths might look familiar to you. I designed them based off of my knit learner's curve dishcloths. I didn't want you crocheters to feel left out.

I like my dishcloths to be on the small side, so you will be able to make these with a regular crochet hook. I'm not going to lie; the i-cord edging (or just crocheted i-cord in general) is very fiddly and awkward. I found using a cable needle or a double pointed knitting needle to hold the stitches together made all the difference at making the edging look great.

Pattern: 

Row 1: ch 15, insert hook into each ch and pull up a loop for a total of 15 loops on the hook,
return pass: yo, pull through 1 loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until you have 1 loop left.

Row 2: Forward pass: (tks, tps) repeat (to) for 15 stitches
return pass: yo, pull through 1 loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until you have 1 loop left.

Row 3: Forward pass: (tps, tks) repeat (to) for 15 stitches
return pass: yo, pull through 1 loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until you have 1 loop left.

Row 4-15: Repeat rows 2 and 3

Finish off

I-cord Edging

With a new color, ch 3, pull up a loop in each ch, insert the hook in a corner st, yo and pull up a loop for a total of 4 loops on the hook, {take the back 3 loops off the hook and put them on the cable needle, (yo and pull through one loop on the hook, take the next st off the cable needle and onto your hook) repeat (to) 2 times, take the last loop off the cable needle, place the loop on the hook, insert the hook into the next st of dishcloth, yo and pull through, yo and pull through 2 loops}

You should have 4 loops on your hook again.

Repeat {to} until you have gone all the way around the dishcloth.

To finish off, yo and pull through all 4 loops, sl st into the starting ch of the edging.

Finish off. Weave in your ends.

Being in Ontario, I'm all about having a warm hat and gloves. With that Toronto wind you just need something a little more than just a plain hat to keep the ears warm. 

I wanted to make a tutorial for a double brimmed hat. These hats are much easier to make than you think. If you can single crochet and double crochet then you can make this hat. With this pattern you will make a long rectangle 2 inches less than your head circumference. Make a loop with the rectangle, fold it in half and the brim is done. Then you crochet around the brim to form the hat.

Materials

Yarn: Any worsted weight yarn Model used is Loops and Threads: Impeccable 100% acrylic, 4.5 oz/ 128 g 277yds

Hook: H/8 5.00 mm

Notions: measuring tape, yarn needle

Size: 16, 18, 20 inch circumference 18 and 20 in circumference is in ( ) 

Gauge: 18 st, and 24 rows equals 4 inches 

Stitches Used: sc, sc in back loop, dc, dc2tog

Brim:

Row 1: Ch 15 ( 19, 21), sc in second chain from the hook, and in each ch across. (14 sc (18, 20 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn sc in the back loop (bl) in each st across.
Row 3 - 45 (55, 65): Repeat row 2
Row 46 (56, 66): Ch 1, turn, put row 1 together with row 45 (55, 65), without twisting, sl st into both rows through every st, making a closed loop.

Do not finish off.

Hat

Roound 1: Ch 1, fold the brim in half, so that the stitches are vertical, going across the stitch edges of the brim, sc through the sc posts of both edges, in every sc around for a a total of 45 (55, 65) sc, sl st into the starting sc.

Round 2 - 8 (11, 14): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each sc around for a total of 45 (55, 65) dc, sl st into first dc.
Row 9 (12, 15): Ch 3, dc in the next 2 dc, dc2tog in the next 2 dc, {dc in the next 3 dc, dc2tog in the next 2 dc} repeat {to} 8 times, sl st into the first dc

Row 10 (13, 16): Ch 3, dc in the next dc, dc2tog in the next 2 dc, {dc in the next 2 dc, dc2tog in the next 2 dc} repeat {to} 8 (10, 12) times, sl st into the first dc

Row 12 (15, 18): Ch 2, dc in the next dc, dc2tog in each of the sts, sl st into the first dc, Finish off with a long tail, weave the tail though the last row and pull tight. Make a knot if you like and weave in your ends.

A Free Crochet and Knitting Pattern

I love wrapping presents. It's one of my favorite things to do around the holidays. There is just something about folding the paper and finding creative ideas to make them look festive and beautiful at the same time. There are a lot of options for these.

I have a knit and crochet version for whatever craft you prefer. You can design the tag however you like. You could choose different holiday shapes like me, or you could embroider the monogram of the person you are giving the present to. Another idea would be to number them for an advent present calendar. Whatever you chose they will last for as long as you want them and they will add a personal touch to any gift.

Instructions

Row 1: Ch 9, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. (8 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc. (8 sc)
Row 3- 9: Repeat row 2. (8 sc)
Row 10: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 4 sc, sc2tog. (6 st)
Row 11: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in the next 2 sc, sc2tog. (4 st)
Row 12: Ch 1, turn sc in each st. (4 st)
Edging: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around, ch 1 at every corner.

For embroidery, use all 6 strands of cotton floss to add a simple design to your tags.

Optional Grommet:  Follow the instructions on the package to insert the grommet in between the stitches of rows 7 and 9.

Notions: tapestry needle, embroidery thread
Size: 4 by 3 inches
Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows 
Notes: I tried to make his pattern as beginner friendly as possible. so if you like to keep your edges extra crisp and flat with a beg. sl st and end with a purl Go For It.

A Free Crochet Pattern

I recently created new business cards for myself. The last time I made cards was 5 years ago. A lot has happened in 5 years and a lot of my information was no longer relevant. And if I am being honest they looked awful. They were hard to read and they really did not match who I was. 

This time I really wanted to get it right. I spent 3 days designing them and getting them just right. I had a lot of help from some other bloggers in a couple of the blogging groups I am a part of on Facebook to really capture the look and design I was looking for in my new cards.  I'm sure my family and friends got tired of all the Facebook posts about them. I am really pleased with them and I won't be embarrassed passing these out.   

Do you still use business cards? I feel like they are still relevant for today, especially for makers and for those that need to network outside of the internet. They are easy to add to any packages that you send out, and they are easy to have on hand to give to people who ask about you and your business.  

On the website that I printed them from, they asked if I wanted to purchase a business card holder to go with my cards. That got my design juices flowing, and I decided to make one myself instead of pay for one. 

This holder is full of color and texture, two of my favorite things. This pattern is worked all in one piece so there is no seeming. You can keep it all one color if you chose or you can go crazy like I did, and make it really pop. The finished holder holds about 10 cards, and it is perfect for keeping in your wallet or purse. 

Yarn: 4 colors of Size 10 crochet thread. For the flower I used an omber shade.
Hook: size 4 steel hook.
Notions: tapestry needle 
Size: 4 in. by 2.5 in.
Gauge: 12 dc equals 2 inches 4 rows equals 2 inches

Pattern Instructions

Holder Flap

Round 1:With color a, Start with a sl knot, ch 4, 11 dc in the 4th ch from hook, sl st into the starting ch 3 (12 dc).

Round 2: Working in the back loops only, 2 sc in 12 dc, sl st into starting sc. (24 sc)

Round 3:Switching to color B,  Ch 1, {sc in the next 2 sc, long sc in the front loop of row 1} Repeat {to} 11 times, sl st into starting sc. (24 sc, 12 long sc)

Round 4: Sl st into next sc and long sc, ch 1, {sc in long sc, 5 fpdc in the next long sc} repeat {to} 5 times, sl st into the starting sc. (6 sc, 6 fpdc petals)

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in fist empty sc in row 3, ch 2, sk 2 sc, {sc in next sc, ch 2, sk 2 sc} repeat {to} 10 times, sl st into starting sc. (12 sc, 12 2 ch spaces).

Round 6: Sl st into first ch sp, ch 1, {sc in ch sp, ch 3} Repeat {to} 11 times, sl st into starting sc. (12 sc, 12 ch 3 sps)

Holder Body

Row 8: Switch to color D, carry color C under your working thread, Sl st into next st, ch 4 (counts as dc ch 1), sk 1 dc, dc in next st, {ch 1, (sk 1 st, sc in next st) twice, (ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in next st) 2 times}repeat {to} once. (6 dc, 4 sc, 9 ch 1 sps)

Row 9: Switch to color C, carry color D under your working thread,  Ch 1 turn, sc in each st and ch sp. (19 sc)

Row 10:  Switch to color D, carry color C under your working thread, Ch 3, turn, dc in each st. (19 dc)

Row 11: Switch to color C, carry color D under your working thread, Ch 1, turn, sc in each st. (19 sc)

repeat rows 10 and 11, until row 30

Break string. Weave in your Ends.

Assembling the Holder

Fold the holder body in half, starting at a corner, sc through both layers of fabric, sc evenly across up the side of the bag, at corner ch 1, sc in each dc of last row, ch 1, sc through both layers of fabric back down the other side of the bag.Finish off. Weave in your ends.
