A free Crochet Pattern

There are some patterns that I come up with that take me forever to finish. From coming up with a concept then making the model piece, making extra sizes so I know I am getting the math right, getting the pieces ready for pictures, taking the pictures, editing the pictures, and last but not least actually typing the pattern out and editing the pattern.

I have a lot  of patterns that just sit around forever. For example I have this blanket that I have been working on. The only thing left is weaving in the ends and taking pictures. I've been on that step for over a month.  Procrastination at its worst.

There are other patterns that just seem to fly off the hook. The pattern that I want to share with you has all happened this week. When fast patterns happen I always feel bad for the other patterns that are waiting to go up on the blog. One day they will get to shine.

Yarn: Lion brand Comfy Cotton Blend Light size 3, 50% cotton 50% polyester 7 oz./ 200g., 392 yds/ 358m

Hook: H/8 - 5.00mm

Notions: yarn needle to weave in your ends.

Sizes: Small (19 inch circumference) , Medium (21 inch circumference) , Large (23 inch circumference)

Gauge: make the first six rounds if it is at 18 in circumference then you have the right gauge

Stitches used: Chain (ch), Single crochet (sc), Half Double crochet (hdc), Double crochet (dc)

Pattern

For All Sizes

Round 1: Make an adjustable ring, ch 3 (counts as the first dc here and throughout), make 11 dc, pull ring tight and sl st into first dc for a total of 12 dc.

Round 2: Ch 1, (sc, dc) in starting st, (dc, sc) in the next st, { (sc, dc) in the next st, (dc, sc) in the next st}, Repeat {to} 4 times, sl st in the first st.

Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), {sc in the next 2 dc, dc in the next sc, ch 3, dc in the next sc}, Repeat {to} 4 times, sc in the next 2 dc, dc in the next sc, ch 1, hdc in the first dc.

Round 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, {sk 1 dc, sc in the next 2 sc, sk 1 dc, (3 dc, ch 3, 3dc) in the next sp}, repeat {to} 4 times, sk 1 dc sc in the next 2 sc, sk 1 dc, 3 dc in the last sp, ch 1, hdc in the starting dc.

Round 5: Ch 3, 2 dc in the starting sp, {ch 3, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the next ch 3 sp}, repeat {to} 4 times, ch 3, 3 dc in the last sp, ch 1, hdc in the first dc.

Round 6: Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, {(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the next ch 3 sp}, repeat 10 times, 3 dc in the last sp, ch 1, hdc in the first dc.

For smaller size Repeat round 6, 4 times or till your desired length. Do not finish off. 

For medium and large size:

Round 7:  Ch 3, 3 dc in the same sp, {(4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) in the next ch 3 sp}. Repeat 10 times, 4 dc in the last sp, ch 1, hdc in the first dc.

For the medium size repeat round 7, 5 times or till your desired length. Do not finish off.

For the large size:

Round 8: Ch 3, 4 dc in the same sp, {( 5 dc, ch 4, 5 dc), in the next ch sp}. Repeat 10 times, 5 dc in the last sp, ch 2, hdc in the first dc. 

Repeat round 8, 5 times or till your desired length do not finish off.

For the Brim, small (medium, large):

 Round 1: Ch 1, sc in same sp,{ ch 3 (5, 7), 2  sc in the ch 3(4) sp},  Repeat 11 times, ch 4 (6,8), 1 sc in the last ch sp, sl st into the first sc. (60, (72, 84) sts)

Round 2: Ch 1, sc, {3 (5,7) sc in the next ch sp, sc in each sc}, repeat {to} 11 times, 4 (6,8) sc in the last ch space, sc in the last ch sp, sl st into the first sc. (60, (72, 84) sts)

Round 3: Ch 3, (counts as a dc here and throughout), working in front posts only{dc in the next 4 (5, 6) sc, 2 dc in the next sc}, repeat {to} 12 times, sl st into beginning sc. (increase by 12) 

Round 4: Ch 3, {dc in the next 5 (6, 7) dc, 2 dc in the next dc}, repeat {to} 12 times sl st into beginning dc. (increase by 12) 

Round 5: Ch 3, {dc in the next 6 (7, 8) dc, 2 dc in the next dc}, repeat {to} 12 times sl st into beginning sc.

 For small finish off or continue for a larger brim

Round 6: Ch 1 { sc in the next 7 (8, 9) sc, 2 sc in the next sc}, repeat {to} 12 times sl st into beginning sc. 

For medium finish off or continue for a larger brim

Round 7: Ch 1 { sc in the next 8 (9, 10) sc, 2 sc in the next sc}, repeat {to} 12 times sl st into beginning sc.

For large finish off or continue increasing each row for a lager brim.

I definitely feel like I have been in a funk. I have been designing, and I have ideas, but then I just kinda get stuck when it comes to writing or finishing the whole project or picking the right yarn for the project.

So I decided to make/design something that I love. Baby hats. I kept it simple so I would not get stuck on not wanting to write the pattern out. Even in it's simplicity it has a great texture and visual appeal to it.

If you are new to bullion stitches there are some good Youtube videos. There is only one row that uses the stitch in the hat so it is great for beginners. There is also one bullion stitch for the butterfly body.

Hook: H

Notions: yarn needle

Size: newborn, (3months, and 6 months) in parentheses

Pattern Instructions: 

Round 1: with an adjustable loop, ch 1 (does not count as a stitch here and throughout), 8 (9,10) hdc in the adjustable loop, pull the adjustable loop tight and sl st into beg hdc.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in the first st and in each st around for a total of 16 (18, 20) hdc, sl st into beg hdc.

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in the first st, 2 hdc in the next st, {1 hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st}, Repeat {to} 6 (7,8)more times, for a total of 24 (27, 30) hdc.

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 hdc in the first 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, {1 hdc in the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st}, repeat {to} 6 (7, 8) more times for a total of 32(36, 40) hdc.

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in the first 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, {1 hdc in the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st}, repeat {to} 6 (7, 8) more times for a total of 40 (45, 50) hdc.

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in the first 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, {1 hdc in the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st}, repeat {to} 6 (7, 8) more times for a total of 48 (54, 60)  hdc.

Round 7- 14 (16, 18): Ch 1, hdc in first st and in each st around for a total of 48 (54, 60) hdc.

Round 15 (17, 19): Switching to new color,  Ch 2 (does not count as a st), make a bullion st using 5 yos, in each hdc around for a total of 48 (54,60) bullion sts.

Round 16 (18, 20)- 17 (19, 21): Switch back to first color, repeat round 7. Finish off at last row. Weave in your ends.

Bullion Butterfly

Ch 6, dc in the 3 ch from hook, 1 dc in the same ch,  3 dc in the next ch space, ch 3, turn, 1 dc in the dc just made, ch 1, sk 1 dc, dc in the next dc, ch 1, dc in the next dc, ch 1, sk 1 dc, 2 dc in the last dc. Finish off. First wing is finished.

 Join with a ch 3, in the beginning ch on the opposite side of the start, 2 dc in the same ch, 3 dc in the next ch, ch 3, turn, 1 dc in the dc just made, ch 1, sk 1 dc, dc in the next dc, ch 1, dc in the next dc, ch 1, sk 1 dc, 2 dc in the last dc. (second wing made). Sl st down to the beginning two chs, ch 5, bring the ch 5 up over the butterfly and sl st into the first ch st of the start of the butterfly, make a 7 yo bullion on the opposite side of the butterfly, sl st in the first ch. Finish off. Weave in your ends.

To make antennae: Ch 14. Finish off. Attach the antennae like you would a tassel.

I am starting the process of adding all of the patterns that I have designed for http://crochetvolution.com/ to my blog. They will still always be there at that site and the link on Ravelry will still always take you there, but I wanted to have my patterns all in one spot. At least with the ones that I am allowed to do that with.

I thought I would start with the first one and work my way down. Interestingly my very first pattern is still one of my most popular patterns. I guess it is a good one. You may find the wording a little different from the original pattern, but I hope it provides more clarity.

Infant Hat in Simple Cables

Head circumferences from 14 in.

FINISHED MEASUREMENT

 14 inch circumference (new born) use size G hook

MATERIALS

Simply Soft by Caron [fiber content; 6 oz. / 170 g skein]

Hook size: G

PATTERN

Round one:

Ch 4, 11 dc in fourth ch from hook, sl st into

 3^rd chain of beginning stitch. (Twelve stitches made.)

Round two:

Ch 3, make a dc in the same space, two dc in each of the remaining stitches, (24 dc total.)

Round three:

Ch 3, 1 dc in same space {skip 1 dc and tr in next stitch, go back to last stitch missed and tr, (2 dc in the next stitch) repeat (to)}, repeat {to} 4 times, sk 1 dc and tr in next stitch, go back to last stitch missed and tr, 2 dc in next stitch, slip stitch in starting ch 3. (6 crossover stitches, and 6 groups of 4 dc sts.)

Round four:

Ch 3, 1 dc in same stitch, and 1 dc in next stitch {sk one tr and tr in next front post, go back to the skipped stitch and tr in the front post, dc in the next 2 st, 2 dc in the next st, and 1 dc in next st} repeat  {to} 4 times, sk 1 dc,  tr in the next front post, go back to last stitch missed and tr in front post, dc in the next two stitches, sl st in the starting ch 3. (6 crossover sts, and 6 groups of 5 dc sts.)

Round five:

Ch 3, 1 dc in the same stitch {sk next stitch and tr in next, tr in the sk st, dc in the next 2 st, sk next stitch and tr in next st, tr in sk st, 2 dc in the next st}. Repeat {to} 5 times, sk next stitch and tr in next, tr in the sk st,  slip stitch into beginning ch 3. (12 crossed sts.)

Round six- ten:

Ch 3, 1 dc in the next stitch {sk next st and tr in the next front post, tr in the sk front post, dc in the next 2 st}, repeat {to} 10 times), sk next st and tr in the next front post, tr in the sk front post,  slip stitch into beginning ch 3.

Round eleven – thirteen:

Ch 1, sc in each stitch around, slip stitch into beginning chain. Finish off at the end of round thirteen. Weave ends

in.

Tears in Baby Hats

There was an ancient practice of catching your tears of grief in a vessel when someone died. When it was time to bury or cremate that person your vessel of tears would go with that person. This past year I cried all of my tears in to baby hats.

In February of last year my husband and I found out we were expecting. We had only been trying for a couple of weeks and I was pregnant. We were excited about having our dreams come so soon, and at the same time frightened at expanding our family and change. Within a week of finding out I started having complications. It came about that our precious little one was an ectopic pregnancy.  The doctors were never able to locate were my baby decided to grow, but it was not where it should have been, so it was only growing at 5 % instead of 100 %. My husband and I had to make the decision to end my pregnancy. At 11 weeks into making dreams and a new family I took a shot that would end all those dreams.  Then for another 11 weeks I had to go to the doctor and get my blood taken to watch my pregnancy numbers go back down to 0.

During all of this time I was crocheting. I was so excited to start making things for my new little one. I started making hats, sweaters, little booties. When we found out we would not be able to keep the baby I could not bring myself to stop. When the grief became overwhelming I would get out my hook and I would make a hat, some days that hat would turn into three hats. Often times I could not even see what I was making for the tears that were dropping on to the hat. After three months I had two under the bed totes full of baby hats, diaper covers, booties, and sweaters. After that time I found I did not have to go to my hook so often to shed my tears.

Now that a year has passed I am down to just one tote. Some of the hats have been given to friends. Some have gone to a local hospital. And I have even sold some.  

I wanted to tell you dear friends how much those hats mean to me. I have poured my dreams and prayers into those hats and I pray that the baby that fills them will grow big and strong and that they will be cherished and loved. When I give you a hat or other crochet items, I’m not just giving you something to keep you warm I am giving you something that has been saturated in prayer and thought for you and even sometimes tears.

A free Crochet Pattern

I have a new pattern for you. I had a lot of fun designing this one. I wanted a hat that when it was done it would look like a flower laying over the babies head. Sort of how a fairy would look if they had a flower for a hat.

There is also an added bonus of warmth around the ears of the hat because of the back post stitches. I have used Simply Soft for the yarn. I love Simply Soft for baby hats because, well its  soooo soft. It also wash and drys really well.

Yarn: Caron Simply Soft,170 g / 6 oz, 288 meters / 315 yards, acrylic 

Hook:8/H 5mm

Size: Newborn
Gauge:  13 sc and 14 rows with a 5 mm (U.S. H/8) crochet hook

Notes: Ch 3 at the start of a round always counts as a st, Ch 2 at the st of a round does not count as a st.

Round 11: Ch 3, {fpdc aound both the first and the next fpdc of row, dc in the fpdc just used, bpdc in next 10 st, } repeat {to} 3 more times, sl st into first fpdc.

Round 12- 13: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), bpdc in each st around, sl st in first st.

At the end of round 13 or desired length Finish off and weave in the end.
