A Free Crochet Pattern
It has been forever since I have designed a baby pattern. It's one of my favorite things to do, so I have no idea why I don't do it more often. My cousin recently had a baby and that got me in the mind to make a few baby things. Also the world is a bit crazy right now so why not do what I love the most.
The pattern below is for the newborn size only, but I have graded the pattern to include sizes up to 12 months. Those sizes are available in the PDF in my shops. This diaper cover is designed to be a high wasted diaper cover. If you want something a little shorter then you will need to reduce your rows.
This is a quick pattern I was able to complete it in under 4 hours, so if you need something quick this will be a great pattern to use. I won't say that it is beginner friendly but it is pretty close.
This pattern also uses some Tunisian crochet. The stitches are used for the waist and leg bands. You don't need any special hook for the stitches the hook you always use will be great. But I wanted you to be aware that those stitches are in the pattern so you can prepare if you don't know how to make the Tunisian knit of Tunisian purl stitch. Even I you don't know there is a full description of how to make those stitches in the pattern and this would be a great practice piece because there are not very many.

Special Stitches
- TPS (Tunisian Purl stitch): (forward pass) Place yarn in front of your work, insert your hook into the left vertical bar of the st below, yo and pull your yarn through. (Return pass): Follow instructions in the pattern.
- TKS (Tunisian Knit stitch): (Forward pass)working with the yarn behind your work, insert your hook between the vertical bars below the horizontal bars in the st below, yo, pull the yarn through, keep your loop on the hook.(Return pass): Follow instructions in the pattern.

Pattern Instructions
Front bottoms
Row 1: Ch 11 sc in second ch from the hook, sc in each ch for a total of 10 sc
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc.
Row 3: Ch 1 turn, sc in first sc, 2 sc in the next sc, sc in each sc to the last 2 sc, 2 sc in the second to last stitch, sc in the last st. (12 sts)
Row 4- 18: Repeat row 2 on even number rows and follow row 3 on odd number rows. Two stitch increase on odd rows. (end with 24 sts)
Row 19: Ch 1 turn, sc in first sc, (2 sc in the next sc) repeat (to), sc in each sc to the last 3 sc, 2 sc each in the third and second to last stitch, sc in the last st. (28 sts)
Row 20-26: Repeat row 2 (28 sts)
Finish off
Back bottoms
Row 1: Ch 11, (13, 13, 15) sc in second ch from the hook, sc in each ch for a total of 10 sc
Row 2-3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc.
Row 4: Ch 1 turn, sc in first sc, (2 sc in the next sc) repeat (to), sc in each sc to the last 3 sc, 2 sc each in the third and second to last stitch, sc in the last st. (14 sts)
Row 5-12: Repeat row 3 on odd number rows and follow row 4 on even number rows. 4 stitch increase on even rows. (end with 30 sts)
Row 13-26: Repeat row 2 (30 sts)
Finish off.
Wip stitch the front and back together with front sides facing together. Sewing at the crotch, and on each side where the increases end.
Waist band
Row 1: (Forward pass), ch 7, turn, insert hook into second ch from the hook yo, and pull up a loop, continue to yo and pull up a loop from each ch, insert hook into first stitch of the waist, yo and pull up a loop, there should be 8 loops on the hook
Return pass: (yo and pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until there is 1 loop left on the hook
Row 2: (Forward pass): tps in the next 6 sts, insert hook into next st of row 28, 8 loops on the hook
(Return pass:) (yo and pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until there is 1 loop left on the hook
Row 3: (Forward pass): tks in the next 6 sts, insert hook into next st of row 28, 8 loops on the hook
(Return pass: (yo and pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until there is 1 loop left on the hook
Row 4- and continued: Repeat rows 2 and 3
When you come back around to the starting row, finish off with a long tail and sew up the first and last row with a wip st.
Leg Bands: Repeat instructions on both legs.
Row 1: (Forward pass), ch 4, turn, insert hook into second ch from the hook yo, and pull up a loop, continue to yo and pull up a loop from each ch, insert hook into first stitch of the leg down by the bottom of the crotch, yo and pull up a loop, there should be 5 loops on the hook
Return pass: (yo and pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until there is 1 loop left on the hook
Row 2: (Forward pass): tps in the next 4 sts, insert hook into next st, 5 loops on the hook
(Return pass:) (yo and pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until there is 1 loop left on the hook
Row 3: (Forward pass): tks in the next 4 sts, insert hook into next st, 5 loops on the hook
(Return pass: (yo and pull through 2 loops) repeat (to) until there is 1 loop left on the hook
Row 4- and continued: Repeat rows 2 and 3
When you come back around to the starting row, finish off with a long tail and sew up the first and last row with a wip st.
Weave in all your ends.
