Black and Bright Blanket

A Free Knitting Pattern

I've been done with this blanket for about a month and it has already become a favorite for living room snuggling. It is just the right size to throw over your legs and stay warm.

I started planning this blanket when I saw a picture of a rug in the grocery store. It turns out that the finished blanket looks nothing like the rug, but I love that I was able to gain inspiration from it and break it into easy steps that a beginner could follow.

The only stitch you need to know for this blanket is the knit stitch (and k2tog). There are some other technical stuff about where those knit stitches go but I have all the confidence in the world that you will see how it goes and accomplish it.

The i-cord edging is maybe a little beyond beginner and it is totally optional, but I think it is worth learning and it really makes the blanket have a professional finish. I have some tutorials that can help you learn how. You can see those tutorials Here!!!

Pattern Instructions

Squares: (make 12)
Cast on 24 stitches with the black yarn using your favorite cast on keeping it loose.

Rows 1- 48: k in each stitch, turn.

Row 49: switch to a bright color k in each stitch, turn.

Rows 50- 57: k in each st, turn.

Cast off keeping it loose

Turn your work 90 degrees working down the side of your rows, pull up 24 stitches with a bright color in the valleys of  the stockinette rows. (make sure the top of your work is facing up)

Rows 1-8: k in each st, turn

Cast off keeping it loose

Now we are going to close up the square notch.

Row 1: With your work facing up and using the white yarn, pull up 4 loops down the rows of the first bright section completed, pull up a stitch in the first stitch of the second bright section completed, turn (5 loops on the needle)

Row 2: K2tog, k 3, turn

Row 3: k 4, pull up a loop from the next row of the second bright section, turn.

Row 4- 7: repeat rows 2 and 3

Row 8: repeat row 2

Cast off keeping it loose. I found it helpful to sl st into the next stitch of the bright section to better secure it. Finish off.

Sewing the Squares Together

Place the squares how you would like them making sure they are all facing the same direction. Mattress stitch all the squares together.

Weave in all your ends. (I watched a lot of T.V. during this stage. Tip leave the outside ends for when you make the edging. You can just tuck those into the i-cord)

Edging

Row 1: Starting at the bottom corner of the blanket where the black of the the squares are on that edge, cast on 4 stitches on to your needle, pick up one more loop from the row 1, turn

Row 2: K2tog, k 3 stitches, turn

Row 3: K 4, pick up 1 new loop, turn

Keep repeating row 2 and 3 until you reach the last row. Finish on a row 2, cast off.

Turn your work 90 Degrees.

With the white color yarn repeat rows 1 then continue repeating rows 2-3 for 10 rows

On row 11, switch to a bright color.  Continue repeating row 2 and 3 Until the last row

Cast off.

I-cord Edging:

Cast on 3 st with the wrong side facing up. Insert the needle in one of the corners and {pick up a new st. You should now have 4 st on the needle, push the needle down so you are now working from the other end, k 2, k2tog through the back loops}

Repeat {to} till you come to the next corner. At the corners pick up a stitch in the same space 3 times.

Go all the way around the blanket. Bind off. Weave in your ends.

Camden Blanket

A  Free Beginner Friendly Crochet Pattern

I love making baby things in the spring. Maybe it has something to do with new life springing up everywhere in nature, I just have to be a part of it too somehow. Last month my church had a baby shower for the City Union Mission.

It was not a typical baby shower. For one we had no idea who the baby was, and there was no expectant mother there to greet us. The City Union Mission had a need for more baby items, so we answered the call in a small way. On Doughnut Sunday we gathered together all the baby things we collected throughout the month and we got to gush over all the little things that fit babies. When everyone one finished Oooo and awing one of the ladies took all the things up to where they needed to go. This blanket was my contribution to the baby items.

This pattern is a really easy pattern that is great to do while watching a show, or you just need something easy for a change. It was so easy I was surprised that I couldn't find any other patterns like it on Ravelry. Because of that I have typed up the pattern to share with you.
